PQRST and U Waves Naming the PQRST and U Waves In March 1997, I wrote to Howard Burchell to inquire if the legend about the naming of the waves in the ECG was true or not. Did Einthoven really have the foresight to recognize that by choosing letters near the middle of the alphabet, letters would be available to label waves that might be discovered later? Burchell’s response, dated March 31, 1997, is reproduced below:
